DFG's Rules

Joining the Dorset Fungus Group

If you would like to experience a Foray with the DFG just come along to your foray of choice. There is no need to join (although we do charge a guest fee) or even contact anyone in advance. Please arrive in good time and make yourself known to the group - we have to keep track of how many people we have on a foray so we don't leave anyone behind!

A few Precautions and DFG Rules

When the Dorset Fungus Group are out on a foray we take extreme care to try and make sure that no one comes in to physical contact with the "undesirables" of the fungi world. Out of some 3000 different types there are only a few that can be dangerous, but there are many "look-alikes" which is often where the danger lies. Ancient woodland usually contains a rich variety of different types of fungi and may include some rare species. Particular care should be taken not to damage or remove these. Do not collect any of the rare or Red Data List species. Care must also be taken to minimise damage to vegetation, soil and other features and avoid removing dead wood unless this is necessary to identify a fungus.

The Dorset Fungus Group has rules for members and guests to observe. These are:-

  • "Sign in" with the person taking the roll at the start of the foray. If you leave early, please tell the foray leader(s) before commencing or if during a foray call the dedicated DFG mobile on 07375 996014.
  • Heed all instructions given by the foray leader(s) and always keep the foray leader(s) in sight.
  • Do not pick or touch anything without first seeking advice.
  • Never put anything in or near your mouth and always wash your hands after (or even during with wet-wipes etc) a foray.
  • Be sure not to put inedible/toxic specimens together with edible ones.
  • Don't pick edible species you don't plan to eat, and then less than 1.5kg, or fewer than half the fruit bodies, of any one type, whichever is the lower.
  • Please supervise your children at all times.
  • Dogs are allowed but MUST be well behaved and on a fixed length lead. Be aware some venues do not generally allow dogs.
  • Observe the Countryside code at all times: Fasten all gates. Take any litter home. Do not dig up or pick wild flowers etc.
  • If you do go out foraging independently (not advised) ensure you have the landowner's permission to be there.
