Martin Down

Sunday 22nd September 2019

10:00am start

This superb reserve is home to an exceptional collection of plants and animals associated with chalk downland and scrub habitats, including a number of rare or threatened species and hopefully fungi! Whilst to the south the main habitat is lowland grassland, north across the A354 is an area called Kitts Grave which is semi-woodland so hopefully should support various types of fungi. This was actually a very productive foray in 2018.

Martin Down is jointly owned and managed by Natural England and the Hampshire County Council (although a small part is actually in Dorset).

The reserve is 14 kilometres south west of Salisbury and 1 kilometre west of Martin village and roughly mid way between Blandford & Salisbury. Access to the site is via the main A354 which actually passes through it. There is a large car park off the A354 at which is our meeting place, if driving a high vehicle be aware that there is a height restriction bar at the entrance as well.
