Stunning find at Delph Wood

to start the season

At Delph Wood (on Sunday 1st September 2013) Will Newitt spotted a "varnished-looking" bracket fungus growing on a Yew tree that no-one could identify on the spot.

Subsequent investigations indicate that it was the very rare Ganoderma carnosum. This is one of only two brackets which grow on Yew, the other being the well known Laetoporous sulphureus (Chicken of The Woods).

Looking at the records it would also seem that there is only one other instance of it in Dorset (Charminster churchyard, near Dorchester in 2004) and only 54 records for the UK as a whole!

What a cracking start to the season!
